How To Find Profitable Products To Promote - Identifying And Modeling Super Affiliates

As affiliate marketers, should we be leaving our product selection decisions to gossip and intuition. Brad Callen apparently does not believe that we should. He developed Affiliate Elite to provide current data to help us make those marketing decisions. Inside Affiliate Elite, Project #1 is titled: How to find profitable products to promote. Do you think that the identity and campaign details of the super affiliates would help us select products form marketing strategies?

Just in case you did not answer yes to that question, the reason we would want to know the identities of the super affiliates and their marketing strategies for a specific product is that we could then pattern our activities after theirs. Do what successful people are doing, improving upon it if possible. That is a solid success strategy. Affiliate Elite identifies the super affiliates. AE tracks and identifies their strategies all in later projects. Project #1 also reveals important information. The lower tab referred provides a time line for the percentage of sales which are completed by affiliates. The remainder are completed by the merchant. So if product sales are rising and referred is falling, then the merchant is likely running promotions or some successful marketing activity. Use the other projects to identify the activities and jump on board.

Project 3. Analyze Adwords Competition

This function has similar input to Google Adwords as it will ask you to create a campaign and input keywords. It then will search for all ads in that campaign and tell you how many ads are showing for that current keyword. It can search either through Google or Yahoo. This tool gives you an idea of how many competitors are using that exact keyword.

Project 4. Find Super Affiliates

This function asks you to input either a Merchant ID or Affiliate ID and it will search the web for any product that Merchant or Affiliate is promoting. It's so easy to find super affiliates this way since you know exactly who they are by seeing what they are promoting and how many products they are promoting as well. If you are a publisher and you want to look for JV partners or affiliates who will market your products, this makes it real easy for you.

So - what to do first - there's so many choices

Luckily Brad himself came to my rescue! (Yes Brad Callen the software creator.)I was slowly working my way through through the manual, trying this and that to see the features of the various software parts and getting more and more depressed. You don't realise how much you don't know until you start learning! The costs of advertising using pay per click (PPC) are increasing with each new round of what has become known as the Google Slap. At the same time, the sophistication of the competitive intelligence tools available to affiliate marketers continues to grow as each new tool is released. The increasing sophistication comes at a price, and in many cases, the cost involved puts these tools out of reach of all but the affiliate elite.

In the early days of PPC, most clicks cost a matter of a few cents each, regardless of the nature of the keyword that was being targeted. An affiliate marketer could set up a campaign to promote a product, using every keyword that applied to the product being promoted. Because the cost of advertising was relatively inexpensive, he knew that if the product was selling, he would, more likely than not, make a profit.

As the cost of clicks has steadily increased and the competition has grown, the likelihood of initiating a profitable promotional campaign using the scattergun tactics described above, has been reduced significantly.

As this certainty has been eroded, the need for more targeted keyword selection became apparent. This resulted in a rash of keyword tools being launched to meet the demand.

In keeping with their stated aims of improving their users experience, Google launched the first of what became known as the 'Google Slap'. This was a revision of their pricing structure that reflected the quality of the user's experience in the price that they charged advertisers for clicks.

This resulted in some advertisers being asked for $5 and $10 per click, to activate a given keyword.

This was Google's means of 'weeding out' the landing pages for given keywords which didn't provide the user with the information that the keyword or phrase suggested.

Advertising costs were beginning to rise and rise significantly as a result of this policy and in response to increasing competition in almost every sphere of online commerce.

Whilst competitive intelligence gathering was possible without the use of automated means, it was labour intensive to say the least.

There was a very clear need for an automated means of gathering competitive intelligence. And the software developers responded.

Using the Application Programming Interfaces of Google, Ebay and Amazon, software tools began to emerge that identified keywords and phrases which had high search volumes and low levels of competition.

New tools emerged which identified those ads that appeared in the listings consistently and could therefore be assumed to be profitable.

Today there are tools available that can identify which affiliates are promoting a certain product, which ads they are using, which keywords they are using, the volume of traffic they are generating, and the variations on the ads.

In fact, just about every detail of competitive intelligence that an affiliate would need in order to identify a profitable campaign before spending a penny of their own money.

The only downside from the point of view of the average affiliate marketer was the cost. Some of the tools available came with a monthly price tag that would have covered most people's car payment.

Fortunately for the average affiliate marketer, the playing field has just been levelled.

Brad Callen's new software program, Affiliate Elite, is a frequent topic of conversation on many forums and other internet marketing venues. It is hard to do a search for the word "affiliate" without finding some mention of this program. But as any seasoned internet marketer knows, most programs promoted are garbage being peddled till they wear out after earning the owner's a nice fat profit so naturally I was a bit cynical when I first heard of this program.

Affiliate Elite software (here after "AE", like many keyword tools analyzes Google and MSN to find niche keyword markets to turn into a lucrative revenue stream. If you have heard of Adword Analyzer then you should be able to grasp the core concepts of AE. Adword Analyzer has been around for several years now and many people were quite satisfied with it, I was not one of those people. I can recall as clear as day reading the sales page and eagerly shelling over the $80 for the program. Unfortunately my copy did not function properly, so I emailed site support; well after two weeks and 20 emails, and no reply, I returned it. Since AE is a similar program just seeing the sales page brought back many wasted hours of email typing time. However, I talked to several friends in the affiliate world who had purchased the software, after hearing their positive opinions I decided to give it a try. The $170 price tag and reoccurring monthly membership of $40 seemed quite steep to me, but I always set aside some of my net income to try new programs so I figured "what the heck".

Well earlier, as you remember, I mentioned Adword Analyzer, and aside from the token similarity of keyword research, as far as I am concerned these programs have nothing in common. I say that because of the AE software's ability to analyze what keywords your competitors are using, how much they pay, and if they convert. If you have dabbled in affiliate marketing for even a moment, you know such an arsenal packs a heavy punch in any affiliates war chest. Using the software I was able to analyze the competing Adword bidders on a particular product I was promoting, and before long I was able to beat them. Needless to say both I and my bank account were quite happy with the outcome.

There are other software tools that can perform a similar function on the internet today. The most noteworthy which comes to mind is "RJ Xray", yes I am referring to the much hyped Rich Jerk. I can not speak to the programs effectiveness, because I have never tried it, mainly due to the $1400 dollar price tag. I've wasted a lot of money on silly purchases, but I think $1400 is ridiculous. From my own research AE and RJ Xray do the same thing , AE at a cheaper price.

Is Affiliate Elite right for you? That depends on whether or not you have the money to spend on the program. Gurus like the Rich Jerk would encourage you to put it on your credit card, but any adult knows that's not a responsible use of credit if you don't have the money to invest in the first place. However, if you feel you can spare $170 and an additional $40 monthly to potentially make a lot more, then Affiliate Elite may just be for you.

Affiliate marketing has developed by leaps and bounds over the last 12 months. This has led to ever more sophisticated software tools being developed to help improve the profitability of affiliate marketing campaigns, when deciding which products to promote and which keywords to use for their promotion. Some of these tools come with pretty significant price tags attached, putting them well beyond the range of all but the upper echelons of the affiliate elite.

It used to be that if you spotted a product that looked like it was selling well and it had an affiliate program, you'd take a couple of relatively basic steps and start promoting that product. If it sold through your link, then you made a commission. Even if you did some pay per click (PPC) or banner advertising, the chances were that you made a lot more than the clicks had cost you. The only thing you used to work out your profitability was a simple calculator, and you deducted the cost of your advertising from your commissions - and provided you had a positive number at the end, you could feel reasonably happy.

Then as the costs of clicks started to rise, and people started to realise the relevance of keyword selection, affiliates started to 'track their ads' - using server-side scripting to identify which visitor clicked which ad, containing which keyword, to arrive at their site. This led to greater selectivity in the choice of keywords that affiliates used to promote products.

If they were really smart they also employed split-testing to compare variations of their landing pages, to improve the conversions those pages were achieving.

At about the same time as the cost of clicks started to rise, Google opened up its Application Programming Interface (API) to independent software developers to build applications driven by data drawn directly from Google's databases.

Amazon, Ebay and ClickBank among others, were all doing much the same thing at or about the same time.

To begin with the data accessible was relatively straight forward and pretty limited in scope. Applications were pretty limited in what they could achieve and were little more than alternatives to logging into your Adwords account on line.

This has all changed over the last 18 months, with the arrival of what have been called Spy Tools.

These are tools that affiliates can subscribe to or purchase outright, which will identify virtually every aspect of a marketing campaign. Including, which affiliates are promoting which products, what keywords are being used to promote products, the ads which, by dint of their persistence in appearing in the paid listings can be assumed to be profitable, the landing pages that the ads lead to, the cost per click of the ads and the traffic that the ad is generating.

With each successive launch of these 'Super Tools' they have become ever more affordable, whilst still remaining beyond the reach of the average affiliate marketer.
